Build a Better Burger

I’ve been wanting to make my own burger patties after reading several articles about how unhealthy and fattening fast food burgers are. Well, I really could do with a recipe book to help me Build A Better Burger.

Apparently each summer, thousands of cooks compete in the “Build a Better Burger” recipe contest at the Sutter Home Family Vineyards in Napa Valley. To mark the 15th anniversary of the cook-off, best-selling cookbook author James McNair has compiled 44 of the most mouth-watering recipes that have won awards since BBB began.

In this book, Sutter Home’s culinary director and executive chef, Jeffrey Starr, also suggests a wine match for each burger and offers general burger- and wine-pairing tips. Build A Better Burger is the perfect summer companion and it’s a recipe book that no backyard cook should be without. Also makes a perfect gift!

You can find this book at Shop Manhattanite together with free shipping on all orders over $150.

a good strong cup of Shock coffee

Do you like coffee? I do, and last week, when I lost one whole night of sleep to a series of ah-choos, I really needed a good, strong cup of coffee to help me stay awake the next day. I wish I’d bought myself a Ground Coffee “Energy Blend”, no kiddin’.

Shock Coffee is, as the name suggests, hyper-caffeinated coffee and if that can’t keep you awake, I don’t know what can!! It also makes the best-tasting cup of coffee. You can check their Shock Coffee Starter Kit if you want to try it out for yourself. Or order their Shock Coffee Gift Set as a gift.

It’s definitely cheaper to brew your own coffee, not to mention the wonderful smell that will fill your house. Instead of going out with friends to a designer coffee house, just invite them over and brew yourself a great get-together  .

baby’s moon yueet, or fullmoon

My newborn niece turned one month old recently and my cousin brought over a whole basket of traditional fullmoon (or moon yueet in Chinese) goodies, homecooked by my aunt who is a wonderful cook. There’s

  • a huge cut of roast pork
  • 6 red eggs to go with the preserved ginger slices (look under the roast pork in the picture)
  • kunyit (turmeric, or what I call yellow) rice to go with the chicken curry (sorry, my kids got to the curry before I could snap this picture  )

all placed on a coconut leaf for that added fragrance. Yum, this is the real thing.

fullmoon

Unfortunately, not many young couples these days have the luxury of their moms cooking up an authentic fullmoon package like this to distribute to close relatives. Instead many have to opt for those fullmoon packages from restaurants that come with cakes and red eggs.

It’s customary to reciprocate fullmoon gift packages with an ang pow, or red envelope, as a gift to the baby.
