Admittedly I’m no expert when it comes to selecting melons, whether watermelon, cantaloupe or even a pumpkin. How do you tell if the fruit is good or sweet or juicy? Or in this case, we were faced with basketfuls of honeydew melons and I didn’t know which one to choose.
With watermelons, you apparently knock on it and if the sound is hollow, then it’s juicy. I think we’re supposed to smell it but we couldn’t smell a thing
. So I started knocking on them and that got my daughters laughing out loud.

A lady who was nearby was also as clueless as I was. She asked me which ones are good. I’m guessing it would have to be by trial and error, it’s not like we’re buying a life insurance policy, right?
It so happened my daughter was just then saying the one with the smooth, flawless skin should be good. And I was saying, also for the benefit of the lady, that since beauty is skin deep, the uglier melons with patches and wrinkles must be better
.
And my daughter replied that the ones with wrinkles must be old and not so good. The young, pretty ones should be better. Hahaha, what clowns we are! In the end, I picked the sweet? young one with the smooth, flawless skin
. Now we’ll just to wait and see if it tastes as good as it looks.
