my favorite coffee place

When I went to pick up my son from college on Monday, he handed me one of these.

How sweet! And I don’t mean just the coffee  . If you ask me, San Francisco Coffee is the best, yes better than all the ‘others’!

There’s an outlet near my son’s college and that’s where he often hangs out with his laptop between classes. And after a certain time of day, you get another cup free with your order.

learning about wines

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before but I’m a really late bloomer when it comes to wine. Whenever I was offered wine, I would instinctively turn it down. I guess I don’t quite care for the taste. But in the past few years, I’ve started to enjoy the occasional glass of red wine at dinner.

Guess I’ve been missing out. I’m thinking that if I ever want to widen my wine tasting horizons, I should probably join a wine club. Right now, I know next to nothing about wines. But a wine club would be a great place to learn and pick up useful nuggets of information.

In a wine club setting, I’m assuming conversations would revolve around different types of wines and how each is different, etc. It certainly would be a much more interesting way to learn about wines as opposed to surfing the net, I think.

I have several bottles of wines in my kitchen which, I have to admit, I’ve never taken much of an interest in. I probably should go check them out and invite some friends over for an impromptu wine tasting session  . I know that doesn’t sound like me at all but heck, there’s always a chance I’ll learn something new.

breakfast @ Otak-Otak Place

For the past few mornings last week, I’ve been having breakfast at this new place I found. Well, I’d read about their $5 breakfasts but not being someone who eats breakfast out very often, I didn’t pay much attention.

But I have a gym partner now who faithfully hangs out with me when I go shopping for groceries and holiday gifts, and one morning, we decided to check out the Otak-Otak Place. It’s a themed restaurant reminiscent of your no-frills school canteen back in the good old 1960′s, complete with old-time songs played on wobbly records.

They have a few breakfast sets to choose from which come with tea or coffee, and my girl friend ordered the one that comes with Chicken Curry and Toast in a basket…

… and English tea with a Jacob cracker on top. So cute!

And I chose to have coffee with Nasi Lemak, or coconut rice with spicy condiments.

I’ve seen Otak-Otak Place franchises located in a few of the major shopping malls around town. Their breakfast is pretty okay for the price and I like that the place is nice and quiet in the mornings.

grass jelly, anyone?

There’s nothing like a long cool glass of grass jelly to chase the afternoon heat away. In the old days, my grandmother would occasionally buy a slab of grass jelly, cut it into strips, dump it into a jug of sugar syrup and toss in lots of ice to make a lovely iced drink.

These days, grass jelly drinks are sold in cans. The jelly is soft and black with a bit of a bite but tastes bland on its own. I couldn’t resist buying a few cans the other day just thinking of how sunny it is outside  .

grass jelly

Grass jelly is known for its cooling and refreshing qualities and helps to prevent bodily heat from building up and causing fevers and flus. So yeah, it’s always a good thing to have around if you’re out in the sun a lot like on your Gatlinburg vacations in summer when you often forget to stay hydrated.

jasmine green tea

This is another free can of tea leaves I received as a gift. I love the container and even after I finish the tea, I will keep the can and use it for something else simply because it’s too pretty to throw away. I love jasmine tea and green tea so this is the perfect combination of flavors.

Again I can’t tell you what the brand is because there’s no English words on it besides what’s there. But what I can tell you is that drinking a cup of Chinese tea after a meal is said to dissolve the fat and keep you nice and slim so you won’t need to resort to popping Fenphedra. So what do you say? Give it a try  .
