eating out vs cooking at home

We’ve been eating out a lot over the past couple of months, as we usually do this time of year. We kicked off the new year today (oh Happy New Year, by the way!) with lunch at Carl’s Jr, one of our favorite haunts. I guess it takes a new year for us to realize how small their burgers have become since we first started eating there.

That’s how the restaurants do it these days. They may not increase their prices, which makes you think, oh yay, so nice of them, no price increase! But if you pay attention to the serving sizes, you’ll notice them shrinking little by little.

It’s the same with McD’s, another of our favorites. The buns are getting thinner, the patties are getting thinner and when you’re done eating, you’re wondering where that burger went. I have 3 teens with ravenous appetites and they’re hungry again barely an hour afterwards. So I know!

This year, we’re going to ditch some of our favorite haunts and start looking for places that give more value for money. We’ve been going to Subway for their half-foot submarine promotion. For now, it’s an okay deal depending on whether the guy that assembles your sandwich on that glass tile likes your face  .

We’ll try to eat out less this year. Cooking at home is healthier and more economical. But it’s a lot of time and work spent in the kitchen. So there’s a trade-off there. We’ll see how well we do with cutting down on eating out  .
