This is the first year we decided to have our Chinese New Year reunion dinner out. The weather’s been so hot I decided not to slave in the kitchen this year.
We’d planned to go for a Western meal (rebels that we are!) but since my youngest daughter has just recovered from the flu, we decided to have something simple and not too heavy instead.
We didn’t have any dinner reservations and from what we know, everyone else would’ve made theirs weeks ahead to secure a table. True enough, we went to 2 restaurants and both were fully booked.
Finally we decided to try our luck at Thong Kee, which serves a delicious yee sang, or raw fish salad, our must-eat every Chinese New Year.
As usual, we have our Yee Sang sans raw fish since my kids won’t eat anything raw. Instead we opted for hoi chit, I think it’s some kind of sea anemone or jellyfish or something
.

We ordered a Stirfried Kailan, or kale with garlic cloves – simple but yummy except the veggie is a tad over-matured and chewy.

This Roast Chicken with Mango, Thai Style is bursting with tropical flavors. The mango and onion strips really bring out the sweet, sour spiciness of the Thai sauce that bathes the crispy roast chicken.

This Claypot Tofu is the restaurant’s house specialty using 3 different types of tofu made inhouse by their chefs.

The Yam Basket is another of our favorites. True, this yam basket isn’t as flavorful or as crispy as some of the other ones we tasted but I’m happy it’s at least not overly salty.

It was a good family meal that went great with a pot of heong peen, a hot Chinese tea with a slightly bitter aftertaste. It was a cool drizzly evening so it was nice dining al fresco albeit under an awning.
We’d expected to get ripped off since Chinese restaurants tend to spiff up their dishes with auspicious Chinese New Year names so they can charge double the normal price.
But this entire meal came to only rm130 for 7 of us (we had 2 guests) which is really so reasonable I couldn’t have cooked up anything that tastes half this good for this price. So it was really worth it
!
