My newborn niece turned one month old recently and my cousin brought over a whole basket of traditional fullmoon (or moon yueet in Chinese) goodies, homecooked by my aunt who is a wonderful cook. There’s
- a huge cut of roast pork
- 6 red eggs to go with the preserved ginger slices (look under the roast pork in the picture)
- kunyit (turmeric, or what I call yellow) rice to go with the chicken curry (sorry, my kids got to the curry before I could snap this picture
)
all placed on a coconut leaf for that added fragrance. Yum, this is the real thing.

Unfortunately, not many young couples these days have the luxury of their moms cooking up an authentic fullmoon package like this to distribute to close relatives. Instead many have to opt for those fullmoon packages from restaurants that come with cakes and red eggs.
It’s customary to reciprocate fullmoon gift packages with an ang pow, or red envelope, as a gift to the baby.
