Okay, I got to warn you guys first. Waroeng Penyet is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Their sambal (chili paste) is a killer, I tell you, even for a chili queen like me but it tastes fantastic.

Penyet is an Indonesian word that means flattened. Their main dish is the Ayam Penyet or flattened chicken. No complaints about the chicken not being flattened. It’s deep fried to a golden brown with deepfried batter crumbs sprinkled thickly over the top. Yum.

We also ordered the Penyet Bakso Goreng which is deepfried beef balls. Not a common thing to do to beef balls but you definitely don’t want to miss this.

In the back of this picture, you’ll see the basket of Penyet Tempe and Tauhu, which is are both deepfried bean curd.

This is my personal favorite which I highly recommend. It’s the Bawal Bakar, or pomfret deepfried to crispy perfection topped with sweet soy sauce. It’s very fragrant and comes with a little serving of fresh cut chili.

Everything is served in a flat basket with a huge leaf of raw cabbage, cucumber and fried tempe and of course, the fiery sambal.

If you find the sambal too spicy, the cooling cabbage and cucumber are a great complement. Their soft drinks are refillable so that’s a good fire extinguisher right there for those who are worried about their tongues catching fire .
